New pilot shuttle bus service launched in Mullingar to link Belvedere House Gardens and Park with Town Centre and Royal Canal Greenway

Tourism and transport have come together in Mullingar to provide a pilot shuttle bus service linking the town centre to the Royal Canal Greenway and the beautiful Belvedere House Gardens and Park.

TFI Local Link Longford Westmeath Roscommon working in partnership with Fáilte Ireland and Westmeath County Council, has developed the pilot shuttle bus service to allow visitors to Mullingar to access Belvedere House and Gardens and other key points in the area. The shuttle service, which will also service the Royal Canal Greenway, will operate Saturdays and Sundays in October and during the October mid-term.

Commenting on the launch of the service, Damien O’Neill, Manager TFI Local Link LWR said;

“It has been such a tough year for people and many people have dealt with that by getting outside and walking and cycling. We are lucky to live somewhere with so many lovely places to get fresh air and exercise. It is important to create opportunities for visitors to the area to choose public transport and cycling. We hope this pilot service will give that choice to the people living in Mullingar and to visitors staying in the town.

 Here in Mullingar, the opportunity to pilot a scheme linking the train station, the greenway and associated trailheads and a key destination venue like Belvedere was a great opportunity for TFI Local Link LWR and we enjoyed working with the council and Fáilte Ireland to develop the pilot.

Westmeath County Council’s Tourism Officer, Úna Doris had a really busy week promoting Mullingar and Westmeath with the launch of a new app for the county, the pilot scheme and working on Christmas activities across the Lake County.“With many visitors now travelling to Mullingar without a car, either by train or by bike on the Royal Canal Greenway, this pilot initiative offers the opportunity for them to explore more of Mullingar, linking the Greenway with Belvedere House, Gardens and Park through the town centre.”

“Fáilte Ireland is pleased to support this pilot scheme alongside TFI and Westmeath County Council. This shuttle service creates a seamless experience for visitors to Mullingar by providing easier access to key points of interest like the Royal Canal Greenway, Belvedere House & Gardens, Mullingar town centre from the train station. As we continue on the path towards recovery of the tourism sector this initiative will support the local tourism economy within Ireland’s Ancient East while also providing an enhanced visitor experience, said Brian O’Flynn, Head of Ireland’s Ancient East at Fáilte Ireland
